This week our group narrowed our problem to a more specific topic, that students don't have the education they need about recycling! According to Voices of Youth 90% of plastic is not recycled and most schools either have no recycling programs or have a recycling program that they no not enforce.
So far we have reached out to TerraCycle, an organization that offers recycling programs, helpful solutions, and events. We have also reached out to the Department of Public Works. They focus on making LA a better community from redoing roads to enforcing recycling. And we have reached out to many more organizations that have strong belief in recycling.
We have heard back from TerraCycle who has confirmed that our problem is actually a problem. They have found that one of the biggest problems with recycling is that people do not do enough of it. They have also said that education is very important and when people don’t know about and/or know the “rules” they do not recycle. If people are asking themselves what can be recycled, there is a problem.
Recycling can make a difference and we cannot wait to explore and come up with a solution to this tragic problem!
